Daniel Bray learned about the Waterways along the Delaware River rising to captain of his own Durham Boat in 1769 at age 19.

Prior to that he was a Scottish farmer in Baptisttown, Hunterdon County, NJ, where his carpentry skills allowed him to learn how to build Durham Boats at Rodmans. He answered the "Call for Freedom" and joined the 2nd Regiment Hunterdon County NJ Militia, earning a promotion to captain in 1775. He earned his position in history when General George Washington needed his help along with others to obtain his own fleet of boats. He used them during the Crossing of the Delaware River on Christmas day Dec 25, 1776 to attack the Hessians in Trenton, NJ. Later he was promoted to general of the NJ State Militia and participated in the War of 1812.
