It has very large leaves and the largest acorns of the oaks. It has creamy white flowers when in bloom during early summer. The shrub is often found in lowlands or wet areas. In the fall, this tree ranks near the top in brilliant red color. It is not unusual to find White oaks over two hundred years old. The tree gets its name from its whitish bark. It is the tallest tree in the arboretum, exceeding 100 feet. It is often planted in parks and unless planted is not found in forested areas in New Jersey due to the relatively warm climate.
